welfare of God’s people
+
2 Kings 14:26-29
+
The reason for this
Word of the LORD
delivered through Jonah
was for
the welfare of God’s people …
+
For the LORD saw
that the affliction of Israel
was very bitter;
and whether bond or free,
there was no
helper for Israel.
+
And the LORD did not say
that He would blot out
the name of Israel
from under heaven;
but He saved them
by the hand of Jeroboam
the son of Joash.
+
Now the rest of the acts of Jeroboam,
and all that he did—
his might,
how he made war,
and how he recaptured for Israel,
from Damascus and Hamath,
what had belonged to Judah—
are they not written in the book
of the chronicles
of the kings of Israel?
+
So Jeroboam rested with his fathers,
the kings of Israel.
+
Then Zechariah his son reigned
in his place.
+
affliction `oniy affliction, poverty, misery
very m@`od exceedingly, much
bitter marah contentious, rebellious against
was no ‘ephec ceasing, end, finality
helper `azar to help, support
blot out machah to wipe, wipe out. exterminate
saved yasha` to save, be saved, be delivered
+
The compassion of God
is shown here,
even when his people
were so against Him.
+
This word bitter
is the only time of it’s 44 usages
to mean bitter …
+
Usually it means rebellious .
+
So though we were told
that this Jeroboam
was no better than
the first Jeroboam,
yet God still used him
to benefit Israel.
+
So this Jeroboam of Israel.
takes back from Syria,
what Syria had taken from Judah …
+
… It doesn’t say
he gave it back to Judah.
+
Jeroboam ruled Israel 41 years,
…. longer than any other king
in Israel.
